Estill Lee Powell Obituary

March 08, 2024

Estill Lee Powell, born May 29, 1939, in Jackson County passed away on February 28, 2024, at Berea Health & Rehabilitation at the age of 84. He was the son of Laffie Powell and Gladys (Click) Powell (Robinson).

Estill was a builder by trade. He was a hard-working, simple man; yet extremely amazing and inventive. Estill was excellent at improvising. He would often create the tool he needed to do the job. He was a master woodcarver, and enjoyed creating things with his hands. He enjoyed gardening, and was very skilled at it. He liked mowing, and always wanted the landscape to look nice. Estill loved to hunt himself, but loved it even more when his son Jeff, and grandson Joe, hunted. He loved watching his grandsons catch fish. He spent a lot of time with his special friends, sharing memories, both past and present. Knife collecting and whittling were two of his favorite hobbies. He loved all kinds of food, especially lemon meringue pie. More than anything, Estill loved his family and spending time with them. Pastor Doug Collins visited Estill several times during his illness, and prayed with him. He indicated to Pastor Collins that he had peace with God.

Estill is survived by one son, Jeff (Valerie) Powell, one grandson, Joseph Kelley, one special step-grandson, Trenton Pigg, and former wife and caregiver, Shirley Powell. He is also survived by seven sisters: Beatrice (Cledious) Abner of Berea, Ky., Betty (Kenny) Berry of Berea, Ky., Reva Hisel of Hisel, Ky., Opal (Danny) Adams of McKee, Ky., Sue (Alvin) Vanwinkle of Paint Lick, Ky., Lois Gabbard Chapman of Richmond, Ky., and Wanda (Ronnie) Shepherd of Gray Hawk, Ky. He is survived by four step-brothers: Otis Robinson, Ernest Robinson, Robert Robinson, and Ronald Robinson. Other survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition, Estill is survived by countless friends too numerous to mention.

Besides Estill’s parents, he was preceded in death by a step-dad, Lester Robinson, one brother, Paul Powell, one brother-in-law, Mason Hisel, one daughter-in-law, Debbie Powell, and one nephew, Justin Gabbard.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 PM at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Monroe Pearson officiating. Buriel will follow in Kerby Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, prior to the funeral. www.lakesfuneralhomemckee.com
