Hometown Hero: Assistant Chief Wendell Frye, McKee Fire & Rescue Department

Wendell Frye, 60, of Pilgrims Rest has served with the McKee Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department for 23 years. Serving the community is a way of life for Wendell. He has also served with the Gray Hawk Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department for the past 6 years. He was raised by Homer & Rosie Carter both from Jackson County. Wendell has one daughter, Debbie Kelley who is 39 years old.

When asked why he volunteers for two Jackson County Fire & Rescue Departments Wendell responded, What motivates me to be a firefighter is that I want to help our community as much as possible. We volunteer our time and service. No one gets paid for this job."

However, it can be donated to a single fire department if specifically noted on the check.
