Florida Man Arrested Almost Naked on Steps of McKee Church in Attempt to be “Verified as God”

Posted

Shortly after 8:00 AM on February 10, 2026, McKee Police Chief Zach Bryant was called to the McKee Baptist Church located on Water Street in McKee, KY, in reference to a male, naked other than under wear, lying on the steps of the church.

Upon arrival, Deputy Brandon Edwards had detained the male. With the assistance of Sheriff Daniel Isaacs and Deputy Christian Collins, Chief Bryant learned that the male (identified as Michael Wayne Chancery, 58, of Merritt Island, Florida) had rammed several vehicles with his vehicle. He subsequently drove his vehicle into “The General Store” building causing significant damage to all the vehicles and the commercial building.

According to Uniform Citation #EY54680, it appeared that Chancery had walked to the McKee Baptist Church where he was located. According to Chancery, he had also thrown a “work bench” through the door of the church.

The investigation by law enforcement officers confirmed that several thousand dollars worth of damage was caused to two parked vehicles and “The General Store” entrance.

Jackson County EMS was called and they transported Chancery to the St. Joseph Hospital in Berea, KY due to his levels of intoxication and abrasions on his arms.

During the EMS ride, Chancery, adamantly told Chief Bryant and the EMS crew that he was “God”, his arms were 10,000 years old, and he wanted to be verified.

During a conversation with Chancery, he admitted that he had taken edibles and smoked marijuana earlier that morning. Chief Bryant reported that he detected the smell of alcohol emanating from Chancery. However, standard field sobriety tests were not possible due to Chancery’s state of impairment.

While Chief Bryant was speaking with the hospital staff about the wreck Chancery had been involved in, Chancery spoke up and advised everyone that he had done everything on purpose to cause a huge scene and become “verified as God.”

The hospital staff inquired about known drug use and were advised that Chancery had admitted to EMS that he had taken two edibles and smoked marijuana. They were also informed of the alcohol odor coming from Chancery’s person. Chancery spoke up and confirmed that he had smoked marijuana and eaten edibles but denied drinking alcohol.

After consulting with the ER staff, Chancery was discharged from the hospital and transported to the Jackson County Detention Center. Chancery was booked and charged with “Disorderly Conduct, 2nd degree”, “Criminal Mischief, 1st degree”, “Public Intoxication – controlled substance (excludes alcohol)”, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence Controlled Substance”, “Failure to Produce Insurance Card”, and “Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance, 1st Offense”.

Chancery is scheduled to appear in District Court on February 23, 2026, for arraignment.

As in all cases at this stage of adjudication, the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until provided due process and determined to be guilty by the court.
