Consider giving to your local food banks
Given the fact that SNAP benefits, at the time of this writing, are slated to be discontinued on November 1st there is no doubt that there will be people in this county, as well as across the nation, who will be facing the upcoming Holidays with less food and more food anxiety than ever. There will be those who will blame this or that party, but this isn’t about placing blame; it’s about helping our neighbors to keep food on their table. Many of those who receive SNAP in our county are children and the elderly, single mothers, and folks with disabilities. It is also the case that quite a few who receive SNAP are working full-time but do not make enough money to cover food costs, especially as they rise to record levels.
But it doesn’t have to be a hungry season. We can all come together to help those around us make sure they, their children, and elderly relatives are fed this season.
A heartwarming and heartbreaking call for donations to our local Food Banks came from Misty Hays, a nurse at the McKee Medical Clinic. Misty says, “November is my birthday, and it was my daddy's birthday. We love this county and we love the people here. I cannot think about elderly people or children going hungry in this county. I know that for a fact our county served food to at least 600 people in this county. So instead of doing any other fundraiser that’s out there, I am asking for people in the county schools, churches, and businesses to make donations to the food bank. I will be glad to pick it up, or if it can be delivered to McKee Medical Clinic. It will be Thanksgiving. Stove top canned veggies, whatever will be great. I would love to challenge churches and schools to do this. Let's make Joyce Marks proud. Let's pack that food bank so full they won't have room.”
Let’s join Misty and help as many of our neighbors as possible.
As usual, this year, PRTC will be matching donations to the food banks. Monetary donations may be dropped off at PRTC in McKee, or checks can be mailed to PRTC 1080 Main St. S., McKee, KY 40447. Make checks payable to PRTC and note on the check which Food Bank you want the funds to go to. Remember that the Food Bank has greater buying power as they can buy in bulk, so monetary donations can go further than food items, but all donations are very much appreciated.
You can also drop off food donations to The Jackson County Sun any morning during the week, and we’ll make sure they get to Jackson County Food Bank.
