MCKEE, KY – A new chapter for Jackson County officially began on Friday, September 19, 2025, with a momentous groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jackson County Fairgrounds and community recreational complex. The event marked the start of a transformative project, made possible by a $4 million line item secured in the 2024 Kentucky state budget.
Kentucky State Representative Timmy Truett, who championed the project alongside Senate President Robert Stivers, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the long-term impact of this investment. "This is a historic day for Jackson County," said Representative Truett. "This is the beginning of something that will change our community for the better forever. This is something our children and grandchildren will enjoy long after we have moved on."
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together a broad coalition of community leaders and stakeholders who have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. The special committee appointed by the Jackson County Fiscal Court, which includes representatives from the following organizations, was recognized for their collaborative efforts:
• Jackson County Fair Board
• Jackson County Saddle Club
• Jackson County Tourism
• Kiwanis
• Backroads of Appalachia
• Jackson County Off-Roaders
• Jackson County Community Collaboration
• State and Local Government Representatives
This diverse group worked tirelessly to develop a comprehensive plan that reflects the needs of the entire community. The new complex, to be built in McKee, is designed to be a year-round destination featuring baseball and softball fields, a walking track, pickleball courts, and a large pavilion.
With the ceremonial shovels in the ground, work will now begin on the initial infrastructure, including access roads, utilities, and parking. This first phase will set the stage for future expansion and development, as the county continues to seek additional grants and partnerships to fully realize the project's potential.
Friday's ceremony was a powerful testament to what can be accomplished when a community unites with a shared purpose. It was not only a celebration of a successful legislative effort but also a recommitment to building a stronger, more vibrant Jackson County for everyone.
