Jackson County Sculpture Park Receives First Piece

Posted

After diligently looking for months for a space to develop a sculpture park in McKee, a location has been secured and the groups involved wasted little time. The park will be located at the intersection of US Hwy 421 and McCammon Ridge Road on the property containing the Bond Memorial Park. This is very near the Jackson County Veterans’ Memorial and also on the road leading to the new Jackson County Fairgrounds/Sports Complex.

Wasting very little time, the new sculpture park in McKee has received its first piece. (I Am Jackson County). Greg Lakes, JC Tourism Director reported, “With lots of volunteer time, planning, and help from a number of organizations and grants, we are on our way to building something that all Jackson County folks can enjoy and be proud of. There’s lots of improvements we can make in our region but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun making things more beautiful. We’ve been working through a grant from the Brushy Fork Institute and People Ready Initiative. A group of Jackson County volunteers put the design together. The artist is Kellene Turner from Corbin.”

Folks to thank are the group of Jackson County Volunteers, Brushy Fork Institute, Jackson County Creative Community, Jackson County Community Foundation - more to come later with the foundation- the Jackson County Development Association, which provided the non-profit and housed the grant money. The Kiwanis club provided the lot, and PRTC volunteered the labor to erect the poles and install the mural.

The project intent through the Brushy Forks People Ready Initiative was to develop a tourism destination and beautify our community with creativity, promoting community pride and momentum toward initiatives to enhance the lives of our people.
