Judge Gabbard Discusses Progress on New Fairgrounds and Road Construction

Posted

The Jackson County Fairgrounds project we have going on is progressing along nicely. Contractors are moving dirt and leveling the mountain as weather permits. We have only had one change order come in and that was for a French drain to help with extra drainage. I currently have Nesbitt Engineering putting together an estimate for widening on McCammon Ridge road to present to the Legislature when they go into session in January. I believe this project could be the center of attention for Jackson County for years to come.

Speaking of road construction, we still do not have an estimated time that Allen Company can get started on the roads we are wanting repaired this year. Allen Company was the only contractor that bid our blacktop and stone this year so we are in contract with them for blacktop work. They are also one of the main contractors that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet uses as well as several Counties. I worked in asphalt construction for over 20 years. When the temperature falls below 40 % blacktop does not bond together as well and you don’t get real good results with the finished product. With all these factors together, we will more than likely not get any blacktop laid this year. It all depends on the weather and availability of the contractors.

Repairs should begin soon on the bridge on Bean Pole Road. As I reported last week, we did not receive any state funds to help with repairs on the bridge so we will be fitting the costs ourselves. We estimate the costs to be around $40,000. The bridge has been closed the majority of the year and we need to get it repaired and open.

Have a blessed week.
