Kentucky children will have access to free summer meals beginning in late May under the Summer Food Service Program, a statewide effort run by the Kentucky Department of Education, known as Sun Meals.
The program offers free nutritious meals to children in low-income areas, with school districts and community organizations serving meals during the summer break. More than 2,000 meal sites are expected to operate statewide this summer, including schools, parks, community centers, libraries and faith-based organizations. In rural areas, some sites will offer multi-day meal pickups or take-home options to help families with transportation barriers.
State officials said the program has expanded significantly. In 2025, free summer meals were available in all 120 Kentucky counties for the first time, and nearly 11 million meals were served between May and August.
“Children who depend on school lunch and breakfast can now access healthy summer meals in every Kentucky county,” said Cathy Gallagher, summer food service program manager at the Kentucky Department of Education. She said the program helps ensure students return to school healthy and ready to learn.
Beginning June 1st, White House Clinic in McKee will serve grab-and-go meals from 11AM-1PM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Meals are served to children ages 18 & under (21 and under with disability).
Families can find nearby meal sites through the USDA’s Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder or by calling the USDA Hunger Hotline at (866) 348-6479. Meal locations and service times vary by community.
