New SNAP Work Requirements Take Effect Across Kentucky

Posted

Kentucky residents receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are now subject to updated federal work requirements that took effect Feb. 1. The changes impact able-bodied adults ages 18 to 64 who do not have dependents under 14.

Under the new guidelines, the upper age limit for mandatory work participation has been raised from 54 to 64.

Eligible adults must now work at least 80 hours per month or participate in approved job training, education programs, or volunteer activities at qualified nonprofit or public institutions.

Those who do not meet the requirements may receive SNAP benefits for only three months within a three‑year period.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than 595,000 Kentuckians currently rely on SNAP.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the new provisions, in effect nationwide from 2025 through 2034, could reduce monthly SNAP participation by an average of 2.4 million people.

Despite the updated rules, SNAP recipients must continue to re‑certify their eligibility every six to twelve months.
