As children head outdoors for summer fun on skateboards, bicycles, scooters and roller skates, safety experts say one piece of equipment should never be optional: a properly fitted helmet. Health professionals warn that helmets remain one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious head injuries during warm-weather play.
Parents often face resistance from children who do not want to wear helmets, but advocates say education and consistency can make a difference. Framing helmet use as a smart way to protect the brain can help children understand why the habit matters every time they ride.
Experts recommend that families reinforce the message by pointing to athletes and other role models who wear helmets as part of their regular gear. Many also support a simple household rule: no helmet, no ride. Safety specialists say the rule is most effective when adults follow it as well, since children are more likely to copy safe behavior they see at home.
Giving children some choice can also ease the transition. Allowing them to select a helmet in a preferred color or style may make them more willing to wear it consistently, turning a safety requirement into something they enjoy and feel confident wearing.
Proper fit remains just as important as wearing a helmet in the first place. A helmet should sit securely without being too tight or too loose, and the straps should form a “V” around the ears.
Experts also stress that not all helmets are interchangeable: bike helmets, football helmets and other sport-specific gear are designed for different kinds of impact and should be matched to the activity.
Be safe and have fun!
