JCHS Generals 1st Annual Baseball Showcase
After not having seen many rain and weather cancellations over the course of the season, the last couple of weeks have seen the Generals lose several games due to the conditions and weather.
On Monday, May 5th, the Generals traveled to play South Laurel. South Laurel entered the night as the second ranked team in the region. The team would fall to the Cardinals by a score of 15-3. On the night, our pitching took a step back and didn't throw the ball as well as we have over the course of the season.
On Friday, May 9th, the Generals responded with a Win over Owsley County in the first showing of the JCHS Generals Baseball Showcase. On this night, the team honored the 2018 JCHS Generals who had won the district title game. This also served as the team's senior night where we honored the commitment of our team's four Seniors: Braxton Clemons, Luke Elam, Cayden Farmer, and Tydus Summers. Starting the game on the mound for the team was Freshman Jamison Roark. Jami pitched 3 innings giving up only 1 hit while striking out 5 en route to picking up his 3rd win of the season, picking up the 19-0 victory. Senior Braxton Clemons would follow on the mound pitching 1 inning and striking out a batter as well. On offense, the team was paced by Tydus Summers who had 3 hits on the night. Luke Elam and Michael Sparks each collected two hits as well. Picking up one hit each on the night was Cayden Farmer, Jackson Lakes, Davon Seals, and Elijah Thomas.
Day two of the event would see the Generals face off against Cumberland County (11-9) in the morning session of the event. Pitching for the Generals was Elijah Thomas. Thomas would pick up his 5th win pitching 6 innings, giving up 4 runs (0 ER), giving up only 3 hits, while striking out two. Coming in for the Generals in relief was Ashton Clemons who would pitch 1 inning, not allowing a baserunner, while striking out 1, en route to his first save of the season.
On offense the team was paced by Michael Sparks and Tydus Summers who each collected 2 hits. Cayden Farmer and Luke Elam would each collect a hit each, with the latter driving in the go ahead runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning. This win would bring the team's record to 20-7 on the year.
In the night cap of the event, the team played in the championship game against a very good Floyd Central team (16-11). Starting the game on the mound for the Generals was senior Cayden Farmer who would throw a complete game (7 innings), allowing only 3 hits and 4 walks, 1 run, while striking out 15 hitters. Unfortunately, it was in a losing effort as the team was unable to scratch across any run support in the game. On offense Farmer led the team with 2 hits, also collecting a hit each was Davon Seals, Elijah Thomas, and Michael Sparks.
The team record stands at 20-8 heading into the last week of play in the regular season. At the time of writing, the team has the remaining regular season games left before heading into the district Championship next Tuesday night (May 20): Tuesday, May 13th at home vs Whitley County, Thursday, May 15th on the road against Berea, and the team closes up at home on Friday, May 16th, against Pulaski County.
