Coach Chris Byrd brings 16 years of experience at the middle/high school levels to his role as Head Football Coach at Jackson County High School. Throughout his coaching career, he has earned a reputation for developing young athletes, emphasizing fundamentals, and fostering a culture of accountability, discipline, and growth.

Off the field, Chris is a devoted family man. He is married to Krista Byrd, and together they
have three children: daughters Jamea Slone (married to Noah Slone) and Brooke Byrd, and a son, Branson Smith.

With a strong foundation in youth coaching and a passion for character development, Coach Byrd is committed to building a competitive football program and mentoring student-athletes both on and
off the field.

Hopefully, Coach Byrd will Bring Stability to the JCHS Football Program
Coach Byrd is the third head coach for the Generals this season. Back in March 2025, JCPS Superintendent Renee Smith reported, "Jackson County High School is proud to announce Jody Mouser as the new head coach of the JCHS football program! Coach Mouser brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and passion for the game. His dedication to developing student-athletes both on and off the field aligns perfectly with the values of our school and community. We are confident that under his leadership, our football program will continue to grow and thrive. Coach Mouser has been an assistant coach for Corbin for the last 17 years and he has coached in 3 State Championship games! The community welcomes Coach Mouser to the JCHS family! We look forward to an exciting season ahead."

Well, the honeymoon didn’t even last until the 2025 Football season started. Coach Mouser resigned his position as JCHS Head Football coach and took a position as Head Coach at Corbin Middle School. Mouser left unexpectedly without overseeing a single practice or coaching a single game.

The Jackson County High School announced on July 09th, 2025 that Coach Bo Callebs had been named the new Head Football Coach for the JCHS Generals. This followed the surprise resignation of Coach Jody Mouser. The day after his official hiring, Coach Callebs made himself available at the JCHS Library to meet players and parents and introduce himself. However, Coach Callebs resigned with more than half the season to go. The team wasn’t winning and several players had voiced discontent with Coach Callebs as their head coach. .

However, Coach Byrd informed the Jackson County Sun that he has no intention of resigning and looks forward to building a competitive JCHS football program and mentoring his players on and off the court.
