The Jackson County High School cross country teams delivered an outstanding performance Saturday, October 10, capturing the boys’ team championship and girls’ runner-up honors.
Heavy rain throughout the competition created difficult racing conditions, but the Generals appeared to embrace the challenge, producing seven personal records and several impressive individual performances despite the downpour.
Senior Malachi Shannon led the boys with a season-best 17:14.99 over the 5,000-meter course, followed by junior Jadyn Agee (17:35.25). Sophomore Hunter Peters finished in 19:19.89, while junior Avery Stewart recorded a personal best of 19:20.46. Junior Jaxon Turner (21:43.86) and seventh-grader Jace Isaacs (21:45.89) delivered two of the day's biggest improvements, each cutting nearly two minutes from their previous bests.
Senior Brooklyn Hammonds paced the Lady Generals with a season-best 23:32.83, followed by freshman Olivia Moore, who recorded a personal best of 24:14.48. Seventh-grader Aleigha Ison (25:13.53) and eighth-grader Alyssa Welch (25:13.84) also established personal records, finishing just 0.31 seconds apart. Freshman Amaya Petty added another PR (31:05.82), while Mackenzie Jackson (30:52.64) and Gabby Isaacs (32:44.15) contributed to the runner-up finish.
"The conditions were toughand I was a little concerned going up to the line, but our kids actually seemed to enjoy running in the rain," said Jackson County head coach Dean Rader. "I'm especially proud of the way they competed and the improvements we're seeing throughout both teams."
After qualifying both teams for the KHSAA State in 2025, Jackson County continues building toward another postseason run. With regional competition approaching, Saturday's championship and runner-up finishes reflect the team's continued progress and the development of its young runners.
