JCHS Principal Greg Parrett Retires

JCHS Principal Greg Parrett is retiring. His last day will be January 31st, 2025.

Superintendent Renee Smith reported that she will appoint JCMS Assistant Principal Jacob Bowling as the interim Principal until a new principal is hired.

Mr. Parrett has had an illustrious career in education (including an impressive resume as Coach. He has influenced many young students and helped develop character, knowledge, and skills that will prove invaluable for their future success.

Mr. Parrett graduated from the JCHS in 1989. (Mr. Parrett noted that several students from classes in this era became teachers. He credits a lot of that to the teachers they had. They sponsored an FTA club and allowed us, as seniors, to co-op for a couple of blocks per day with some of the other teachers in the county. (Mr. Parrett served his co-op with Mr. David Lunsford)

Mr. Parrett began college in the Fall of 89 at Sue Bennett. He transferred Fall of 91 to EKU.

He also attended Union College and EKU later while completing his Rank 1 Teacher Certification. The areas he focused on were teaching Math/Science and Administration.

He graduated from EKU in the fall of 94 completing Student Teaching at North Laurel Middle School with Krenda Anders and Karen Madon.

In the Spring of 95, he served as a substitute teacher, fortunate to get to fill in for a Chemistry Teacher at South Laurel High School (who was off due to illness).

In the Fall of 95 he got hired at Rockcastle County, teaching math. Parrett worked there from the Fall of 95 through the Spring of 98.

During the school years of 95-96 / 96-97 Parrett was fortunate to coach at Rockcastle County Middle School with Jason Coguer and Jerry Reynolds.

During the 97-98 school year, he was an assistant coach under Hall of Fame Coach Christi Beaver Noble at Rockcastle County High School.

In the Fall of 98 Parrett came to Jackson County and served from 98 thru the Spring of 2006. He taught Science / Math, served as an ISS (In-School-Suspension) teacher, and was an Assistant Principal at JCHS.

In the Fall of 06 he took a job in Owsley County, teaching math, and was there until the Spring of 2007. In the Fall of 2007, he took a job teaching Math and Science at the North Laurel High School. He worked there from Fall 2007 until Spring 2011. Parret also served as Assistant Coach with Coach Jim Conway at NLHS.

In Fall 2011, he returned to Jackson County High School, where he remained until his retirement on Jan 31st 2026. At JCHS, he taught Science/Math and served as assistant principal and Principal.

Mr. Parrett is known to many simply as Coach Parrett. He has an impressive resume that he built over many years. Mr. Parrett considers himself blessed to have been a coach of Elementary, Middle School, and High School Basketball for 29 years!! (He reports he was privileged to be a part of over 450 High School wins.)

He was blessed to get to Coach in 38 HS District Tournament games/ 27 HS Regional Tournament games /10 KHSAA State Tournament games /28 All “A” Regional Tournament games and 15 All-A State Tournament games. Mr. Parrett also has fond recollections of a very memorable Elementary Tournament and Championship, as well as several memorable middle school tournament games.

As his retirement grows near, he reported, “I'd like to say thanks to my wife and family for putting up with me and supporting my career each step of the way. Special thanks to all students, players, co-workers, administrators, and community members I've been privileged to be associated with on this journey!! Most of all, Thanks to God for allowing me to make it this far and experience all the unique things I've got to experience. Hope to enjoy many more steps along the way in future endeavors!!”
