Shootin' it Straight - Speak Your Mind

Posted

I truly don’t mind where you stand on Charlie Kirk. You may have vehemently disagreed with everything he stood for. You may have hated his personal beliefs, his religious views, or his political stance. That is fine in every way. While I view it with disdain, you are free to mock his death, his children, or his wife. The beauty of our Constitution is that it affords you that liberty without legal penalties. The flip side of such freedom, however, is that you can be held accountable by the free market.

How people react to tragedy speaks volumes. These past weeks have pulled back the thin veil of decency that many on the left hid behind. Open mockery of a political assassination has caused fallout within their own ranks. The left has been exposed for its true colors, forcing moderates in the party to question what became of the movement they once embraced. Many played their hand and revealed their entire gluteus maximus on social media. While they are legally permitted to do so, as they should be, many seemed shocked when the blowback swept them up. It left some hailing figures like Jimmy Kimmel as political martyrs. Perhaps it’s just his “blackface” and “trampoline” days catching up with him.

Kirk’s assassination has been divisive, splitting the old left from the new left, but it has also united far more sensible citizens than can be counted. Many people in my circle, who previously knew nothing about Charlie Kirk, are now paying attention. The deficiency of morality has never been more apparent.

I have often borrowed the phrase, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Push all ideas to the middle of the table and shine the light on them. If they hold merit, they’ll stand. Kirk did that weekly in front of a live audience, with every interaction documented. He asked people to change his mind or prove him wrong. That should be the model for all discussions and disagreements: air it out, and let the chips fall where they may. If your only means to silence an opposing view is through assassination, then you, and everything you believe in, are for naught.
